Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Having an automated external defibrillator (AED) or ‘defib’ available 24/7 in your neighbourhood could make the difference between life and death for a member of your family, friends or community.

Community Bank Canberra and Regions has partnered with St John Ambulance to source the Zoll G5 fully automatic defibrillator with CPR. If your suburb raises $2500 for an AED, the Community Bank will cover the cost of a bespoke, weatherproof container for the AED and arrange installation. The AEDs are easy to use and maintain and can help save a life prior to an ambulance arriving.

Modern AEDs analyse the casualty’s heart rhythm and determine whether defibrillation is required. Once activated, the AED delivers clear voice instructions to guide users through each step of defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Integrated pads placed on the casualty’s bare skin transmit information to the AED, which senses and adapts to the user’s actions every step of the way.

The G5 has military tested ruggedness, an IP55 rating against dust and water, paediatric capability, CPR feedback on the quality of chest compressions, RescueCoach prompts and it will shock automatically when it detects a shockable heart rhythm.

AEDs will be housed in a customised, wall-mountable cabinet with heart shape Perspex window similar to that shown here. It is ideal for outdoors. With the battery-operated alarm activated, the alarm will go off whilst the door is open.

Positioning of the AEDs is subject to regulatory approval and will be at the discretion of St John Ambulance ACT
